Behind the mask

The flu vaccine was invented in 1938 by Jonas Salk and Thomas Francis — in time to protect US troops during World War 2. In the epidemic that broke out in 1918, people resorted to wearing masks, usually made of cloth, but sometimes mechanical contraptions modelled on gas masks, such as this mask worn by a woman in 1919 in a picture from Getty Images
