The flu vaccine was invented in 1938 by Jonas Salk and Thomas Francis — in time to protect US troops during World War 2. In the epidemic that broke out in 1918, people resorted to wearing masks, usually made of cloth, but sometimes mechanical contraptio­ns modelled on gas masks, such as this mask worn by a woman in 1919 in a picture from Getty Images
