Rapper Rouge’s perfect Sunday

Rouge, actor, rapper

- ● L S.

My Sunday always starts with a prayer, to thank the Lord I’m alive. That’s followed by a quick check of my WhatsApp and social media, of course (I need to break this habit).

Like a lot of people, I sing in the shower. Except I’m actually coming up with new songs (you never know, one of them could be my next hit) and I use my shower head as a mic.

Breakfast is usually Froot Loops and orange juice. I eat while going through my Twitter (I know, I know).

If I’ve had no gigs the night before or I have no work that morning, it’s off to church. It’s all the way in Joburg but I don’t mind the travelling (I live in Centurion) because I need my spiritual muscle exercise. On the way back from church I stop at JB’s Corner for their amazing nachos.

I work a bit in the afternoon, sending mails and checking with the team to see what we have planned for the week ahead.

Sundays are for hanging out with my family. We like to cook or watch the reality show Little Women Atlanta. Then we play some volleyball in the yard.

I have to wash my car because having a

black car is the worst thing. So I hose it down. At least I’ve got company – I gossip with my sisters Carolle and Vanessa.

My mom is a chef so Sundays are eventful when it comes to lunch. One Sunday it’s tortillas, the next it’s gourmet pasta. But I’m obsessed with her spicy chicken! But right before I have a bite, I need to pray.

In the evening I write a few songs in my bedroom studio — in the dark. I’m usually on the floor listening to beats and rapping (which starts as a mumble). Then I turn on the lights and type the verse on my phone.

My sisters are my test audience. If they say it’s lame I go back to my room and write again. I usually pass out while on the phone to my partner — either he calls me or I call him. Then I’ll probably wake up at about midnight to pray and fall right back to sleep. We’re giving away five copies of Rouge’s acclaimed debut album, The New Era Sessions.
