Swiss gold at Geneva show

- Thomas Falkiner

Lake houses, splendid views and beautiful new models. Yep, the annual Geneva Motor Show is one of the most prestigious events of the car calendar. And this year’s running is sure to be a corker. Here’s a quick taste of some of the new metal you can expect to see.

Audi e-tron

The e-tron has been created to take on the ever-increasing might of Tesla. An allelectric SUV cut with all the latest Audi design cues, this four-ringed stinger will be powered by three motors: two on the back axle and one up front. This should allow it to hit 100km/h in around 4.5seconds, which is pretty rapid. Range? The punters are saying that the e-tron should be good for 500km on a single charge.

PAL-V Liberty

Though it may sound like a television set from the ’80s, the PAL-V Liberty is very much an object of the future. Why? Well because it’s able to fly, that’s why. In minutes it can transform from a small city commuter car into a full-fat gyrocopter, pictured left, capable of soaring right up to 11 500 feet. Once airborne its maximum cruising range is a healthy 500km. You’ll need a healthy wallet too because this incredible Dutch creation is tipped to cost a whopping $399 000.

Jaguar I-Pace

Oh, Jaguar, the hype. The Hype! Probably one of the most hotly anticipated cars of 2018, the I-Pace, pictured, is big news as it marries electric power to sleek sheet metal. Put simply this is zero-emissions, planet-saving transport you actually want to be seen in. Two electric motors (one back, one front) provide all-wheel-drive traction plus snappy acceleration. Think zero to 100km/h in just over four seconds. Range is quoted to be around the 500km mark.
