Stratospheric cost of online criminality

The annual cost of cybercrime has hit $600-billion (R7-trillion) worldwide, fuelled by the growing sophistication of hackers and the proliferation of criminal marketplaces and cryptocurrencies.

A report produced by security firm McAfee with the Center for Strategic and International Studies found theft of intellectual property represented about a quarter of the cost of cybercrime last year.
