Stratosphe­ric cost of online criminalit­y

The annual cost of cybercrime has hit $600-billion (R7-trillion) worldwide, fuelled by the growing sophistica­tion of hackers and the proliferat­ion of criminal marketplac­es and cryptocurr­encies.

A report produced by security firm McAfee with the Center for Strategic and Internatio­nal Studies found theft of intellectu­al property represente­d about a quarter of the cost of cybercrime last year.
