HOME SWEET HOME

- NICK YELL

ROOMS

There are four twin bedrooms in the main house and three double rooms in adjacent buildings, which face onto vineyards, fruit trees and olive trees in the background. All are en-suite, have fans and DStv.

STYLE

There is something Herbert Baker-esque in the architecture; especially the 100-year-old façade and entrance hall and there’s an eclectic mix of antiques and comfy couches.

FACILITIES

Braai facilities; a common dining room and two lounges; off-street parking.

SERVICE

Our host, Engela van Wyk bent over backwards to make sure we were happy.

THE FOOD

Cooked meals can be pre-arranged (R160) and a full English breakfast is available at R80 per person. I asked for “some meat and a small salad for a braai” — and got the best lamb chops and boerewors I’ve tasted.

THE ‘DO’ LIST

The Ou Pastorie museum showcases fossils found in the region. You can also visit the Gansfontein Paleosurface, about 5km away, one of the Karoo’s best showcases of dinocephalian footprints. Also, just stroll in town and soak up the village atmosphere.

RATES

R330-R360 per person per night.
