LAST WORD

How DJ Doowap spends her Sundays

-

Sundays for me aren’t for chilling.

Saturdays are my kickback days, but my perfect Sunday consists of me doing a lot of different things. On my perfect Sunday, we wake up super early, probably leave the house around 7am and go hiking.

On the road trip to our hiking destination,

we like to listen to Fela Kuti to feel all African as we’re about to dive into our roots. We also throw in a bit of Nina Simone. I only go hiking in areas with great water pools. Mountain Sanctuary is a great hiking trail in Gauteng, but it gets a little busy for me.

One of my favourite hiking destinations

is Damhoek Pass. I like it because it’s one of the lesser-known hiking spots in Gauteng, meaning you don’t have to compete against millions of people. You can just let free and dabble in that dimension.

My perfect company for these adventures

is my love and my sister. My love is super sporty, so he kind of runs up the trail ahead of my sister and me, who then have time to just chill and catch up.

As we take off on our hike,

we like to just be one with nature, letting the sounds of our surroundings take us over. Beautiful. But when we get to the pool, that’s when we start vibing out. Usually, if we start the trail at 8am or 9am, we end up at the pools at around 2pm. When we get there, that’s when we just start having a party and playing hyped tracks. We like to listen to a bit of grime and really just make the most of the afternoon.

I used to be one of the best springboard divers in SA,

and that’s why having freedom in the natural pools is so important to me. On weekends, I like to mess around and dive. I did a dope advert last year that involved me diving, just showing how much my sport still actually means to me.

Then it’s time for lunch.

I love this place called Leafy Greens because I’m vegetarian. So I love going there after the hike because it’s not far from Damhoek Pass and all those places. They offer an amazing veggie buffet, which is absolutely delicious. Plus the view there is just crazy. Sometimes I spoil myself and have a gin and tonic to really chill out.

Usually by the evening I’ll crash,

but if I’m feeling energetic I’ll go to one of the rooftop parties, maybe Obrigado. I like to lounge out, have a few drinks and just catch up with a few close friends.

To finish off my perfect Sunday,

I’ll have a bit of Asian food. I love Asian food. Once all of that is done, I crash. Hard. A Sunday well spent is a Sunday filled with good food, close people and nature to the max.
