Make better career choices

- — Margaret Harris

It is not easy to decide what career you want to pursue and the best qualifications you can get to make it possible.

Monica Luwes, the graduate centre manager at Sasol Corporate Bursary Services, says choosing a career is about your happiness and wellbeing.

“The right career path will put you on a pathway to life satisfaction and enable you to lead the lifestyle you aspire to. We spend at least 40 hours a week at work, so it’s important to seek a career that will give you a sense of purpose.”

Luwes has the following advice: Compile a list of the things you enjoy doing — they are likely to be the things you are good at too. You need to choose a career that requires these skills;

If you are still at school, the subjects you excel at will give you some clues;

Get some experience by doing holiday jobs or internships;

Talk to the people you know about the work they do and what it involves, to get an insider’s view; and

If you have the funds, psychometric and aptitude tests are helpful. The tests measure your personality, aptitudes and interests, and provide guidance on what jobs would suit you best.
