The year it rained too much

More than 35 years afterwards, Laingsburg is still known for the flash flood of January 25 1981 in which 104 people were killed, many of them children in boarding school. More than 70 of the bodies were never recovered. The town was inundated when the Buffalo River burst its banks after about 425mm of rain fell upstream.
