The number of times the Eiffel Tower has been painted in its 129-year history.

Erected in 1889, it was originally painted red — as a means of protecting the structure from rust.

In the years since, the tower has been painted ochre, yellow and several shades of brown.

Due for its 20th paint job this year, France’s Ministry of Culture and the City of Paris says it’s contemplating whether to retain its current subdued metal colour — or return to a brighter hue.

Painting will begin in October and is likely to last three years. Over the next 15 years, the tower will undergo a €300million renovation, which will include the installation of a bullet-proof glass wall around the monument.
