Manthe’s cool goes global

-

Though the inaugural Afropunk Joburg garnered a lot of buzz (even though headliner Solange cancelled just days before), the international legs of the event are still on the festival bucket list of many a cool kid.

The line-ups of the Atlanta, Brooklyn and Paris legs of Afropunk 2018 have just been announced — and some familiar (i.e. South African) names made the cut.

Fresh off his Safta win and in the middle of his European promo tour for Nakhane continues his winning streak by joining the Afropunk line-ups in Brooklyn (August 2526) and Paris (July 15). Sho Madjozi and Manthe Ribane, above, are other South Africans on the Brooklyn line-up, while DJ Mo Laudi features on the Paris line-up. Nigerian megastar Davido will also play Afropunk Paris.

If you can’t make it to either of these cities or July and August are too far to wait for, there are some other cool-kid festivals happening in our backyard.

In Joburg, for instance, we have the six-day Red Bull Music Festival coming up (April 3-8). On Friday April 6 at the Republic of 94, Trompies, Oskido, Glen Lewis, DJ Tira and Kid X will headline a celebration of kwaito music. On Saturday April 7, UK rapper Skepta will headline the concert at Fox Junction. 340ml, Shekinah and Langa Mavuso are also playing.

Do you even know who Skepta is? Find answers on page 42.

We’re giving away five double tickets to both local events. To enter, simply send us an email with your full name and contact details in the body of the email. The subject should be either REPUBLIC OF 94 or FOX JUNCTION (depending on which event you would like to attend). Winners decided on a first-come basis.
