OLD-SCHOOL BUSH BREAK

-

LOCATION

A few kilometres out of Hazyview on the White River road and just 30 minutes from the Kruger National Park. The hotel enjoys a lofty perch on a hill overlooking the Sand River Valley.

STYLE

Like a safari lodge from the ’70s — which, considering its location, is no bad thing. The rooms look out over a garden full of fever trees and vibrant bougainvillea, which emphasise that you are (almost) in the bushveld. The boma with its roaring campfire and the dark-wood panelling in the bar and lobby add to the effect.

HOW’S THE GRUB?

Dinner in the Letaba restaurant offers both à la carte and buffet dining. Expect the usual fare of roast chicken and roast beef, a spread of salads and lots of sweetness at the other end. Buffets anywhere in the world can be underwhelming but the hotel’s kitchen and dining room staff clearly go to great lengths here to make everybody happy.

ACTIVITIES

The Kruger National Park is 47km down the road, making the hotel a viable base for day trips to see the real wild side.

There is an excellent whitewater rafting daytrip on the Sabie River plus glorious drives up the escarpment to see God’s Window and the fine Lisbon, Berlin and Long Tom waterfalls. Nearby White River has lots of restaurants and various diversions such as orange-wine tasting and a pretty decent motor museum, both at Casterbridge Farm (casterbridge.co.za).

BEST TIME TO GO

Winter, when the Lowveld is balmy.

FACILITIES

The main feature is the pool. Lolling on a lounger and listening to the birds sing is a cure for all unhappiness.

RATES

From R1 211 for a standard twin room in June. Rates will vary according to demand so it’s best to check the website for specials.
