GETTING IN ON THE GAME SHOW

- Matthew Vice

Sometimes quizzes can be hilarious — the questions as much as the answers. Here are some examples you should look up on YouTube THE CHASE

Host Bradley Walsh was worse than the contestants here. A question in one episode asked “what is the cartoon character Andy Capp known as in Germany?”. The three options were: Dick Tingeler, Helmut Schmacker and Willi Wacker. Walsh, above, laughed harder at each one as he read them out, prompting chaser Mark Labbet to say: “There’s a hundred grand at stake here, pull yourself together!”

THE NEWLYWED GAME

During the ’80s era of this game show which was seemingly designed to humiliate young American couples, host Bob Eubanks, below, received many hilarious answers. In a TV interview his stated favourite was a drop-dead gorgeous, blue-eyed blonde named Cathy whom he asked: “Is your husband more urban or rural?” At first she answered she didn't know what those words meant, then guessed and said urban. Bob then asked how long he'd been that way, to which she answered “two months”. Bob then asked if her husband could do anything about being “urban”, and Cathy said that he went to the doctor. The bit that made Bob and the audience laugh their asses off was when he asked: “Did the doctor give him anything for his urban?” Cathy shook her head and said: “He gave me something, though.”

FAMILY FEUD

During the '70s, the host of the Australian version of this family game show, Tony Barber, must have felt awkward after this exchange. He asked a young male contestant: “Do you have a boyfriend?”, then laughed awkwardly, apologised profusely, and asked him, “Do you have a girlfriend?” The young man replied: “No, I’m gay.”

THE CHASE

Bradley Walsh again. This time the question “in what sport does Fanny Chmelar compete for Germany?” set him off. If you're scratching your head, watch the clip on YouTube and hear what the name sounds like when he pronounces it. The best bit is him trying his hardest not to laugh. Even chaser Anne Hegerty (who is on Britain’s Brightest Family on itv Choice this week) tries hard not to catch his contagious giggles.
