Govan Mbeki

Freed in 1987 and served in the National Council of Provinces. Died in 2001 aged 91.

Walter Sisulu

Freed in 1989, elected ANC deputy president. Died in 2003 aged 91.

Ahmed Kathrada

Freed in 1989, served as an ANC MP. Died last year aged 88.

Ray Mhlaba

Freed in 1989 and served as the premier of the Eastern Cape. Died in 2005 aged 85.

Elias Motsoaledi

Freed in 1989 and elected to the ANC NEC. He died on the eve of Mandela’s inaugurati­on in May 1994. He was 70.

Denis Goldberg

Freed in 1985 and worked as a special adviser to the minister of water affairs and forestry. Turns 85 on Wednesday.

Andrew Mlangeni

Freed in 1989 and served as an ANC MP. Turns 92 on May 6.
