A perfect Sunday with Hangwani Nengovhela

- Nengovhela will be showing her latest collection for Rubicon at SA Fashion Week on April 12 at 8pm

Sundays for me are perfect

for just going outside for an early walk and for immersing myself in nature. Sometimes I take a long drive in the countryside with my family.

After waking up

I usually engage my whole family in preparing breakfast before we head off to church. We spend our morning at church. This is an integral part of how I keep myself grounded.

We prefer to spend Sundays as a family.

This is a tradition in our household. We don’t have a particular place where we have lunch every Sunday. If a place looks interesting when we’re in the countryside, for example, we find an unusual building, or a beautiful landscape or even how a particular restaurant or picnic spot is positioned, then we sit and enjoy it. Our Sunday drives are more adventurous than anything else.

When we come back

from our explorations, we relax at home. I usually walk my dogs with my son at sunset. I spend the evening reading and preparing for the week. As a creative person, it is important to do things that inspire my creativity.

There is a place in Limpopo,

in Venda, called Tshatshingo, which has beautiful potholes and rich tales of ethnic history. The fascinating thing about the potholes is that no one knows where the water goes after it has flowed through them. This giant hole has no trace of life in it. The potholes, one of which is 30m deep, are fed from the Mutale River which also runs through the sacred

Fundudzi lake. The water is clear when it is not rainy season, and you can cliff jump if you are brave enough. People have accidentally fallen in and their bodies were never found. I spend most of the weekend, especially Sunday, with family and friends who share my love for history and natural landscapes.

Now and again I yearn for Venda traditional meals

like delele (a green leafy plant), muroho wa-thanga wo kodeliwa (pumpkin leaves with powdered peanuts) and mutuku (sour pap).

Before going to bed

I’ll catch up on some reading. I love to read fashion history and inspirational books.
