At 2.20am, two hours and 40 minutes after hitting an iceberg, the luxury liner RMS Titanic — carrying 2 208 passengers and crew — sinks in the North Atlantic Ocean with the loss of 1 503 lives. The wreck is found on September 1 1985 by a US/French expedition, led by Dr Frank Ballard, approximately 645km east of Newfoundland, Canada, and 3 700m down on the ocean floor
