The price in dollars — about R720 — passengers will pay to check a suitcase into the cargo hold on American Airlines’ new no-frills transatlan­tic flights.

The airline, along with partners British Airways, Iberia and Finnair, has begun selling basic economy fares on some transatlan­tic routes, which are generally around $90 cheaper than the standard economy fares.

The catch is that basic-economy discounts only apply to passengers sans checked luggage. These bags will incur an extra cost, as will selecting your seat prior to check-in.
