APARTMENT-STYLE STAYING

- PAUL ASH Ash was a guest of Mandela Rhodes Place

LOCATION

On Wale Street in the heart of Cape Town, next to the famous St George’s Cathedral and — if you are in the annexe — a spectacular view of Table Mountain. Sitting on the balcony with a cuppa, watching the dawn creep up the mountain while early risers walked to work in still-quiet streets is a lovely way to start a day.

STYLE

Spread across four historic Cape Town buildings but with a motto that proclaims “Where Business Meets Leisure”, this feels like a hard-working business and travellers’ hotel.

It’s really apartment-style living with simple, clean interiors and modern finishes. The reception area has an up-tempo buzz, no doubt helped by the presence of the various shops — a tour operator, a coffee shop and a restaurant, among others. I was billeted in a large suite with cool tile floors and with lots of glass to let the view into the living area.

SERVICE

Reception — pretty much the only place you’ll encounter hotel staff — was excellent.

THE GRUB

The hotel has delegated that area of operations to third parties. Breakfast is at Doppio Zero and lunch and dinner at a place called My Favourite Restaurant. But, then, this is Cape Town central and there are plenty of places to eat at.

BEST TIME TO GO

For me, Cape Town is a winter destination, so any time from now.

FACILITIES

There’s a rooftop pool — a crucial attraction in the blistering summers — and secure undercover parking (a gift in this part of the world) in the basement. The wifi is delivered by outside provider AlwaysOn — best you remember your passwords if your devices are already registered with them.

RATES

The hotel is currently running a special offer of R1 395 per person with breakfast (R2 395 double).
