EASY DOES IT

- ELIZABETH SLEITH

LOCATION

STAYEASY, MAPUTO Anyone mindful of the bottom line will likely be familiar with the StayEasy brand, Tsogo Sun’s “fuss-free” option for independent travellers. That is, the sorts of people who don’t need their hands held through a stay. This hotel is well positioned to help make such independence “easy”, standing as it does next to the new Baía Mall (full of shops and restaurants) on the sea-hugging Avenida Marginal, with many attractions nearby.

With its wide promenade, palm trees and sea views, the lively avenida is a magnet for joggers in the early hours, and a merry parade of coconut salesmen, vendors, and strollers the rest of the day. Join them, or watch them all go by from your poolside view on high.

STYLE

The interiors prove quite nicely that “budget” doesn’t have to mean “bland”. Clean, modern lines coexist with quirky, creative touches — from the cheeky collection of hats-as-light-fittings over the reception to the wall of green shutters in the dining area. Blissed-out beach pictures line the corridors too, invoking — whether you’re here for business or pleasure — just a touch more pleasure.

SERVICE

Enchanting smiles all round.

HOW’S THE GRUB?

The rate includes a light buffet breakfast with the usual suspects on offer. No other food is available at the hotel but the mall next door has an Ocean Basket and a Mugg & Bean (coming soon), plus a Spar and Woolies Food, and the StayEasy has facilities for microwaving meals.

Going out, though, try the sea-side Fish Market for lunch — it’s a 2.5km stroll away. Also on the water, the laid-back Waterfront Restaurant is recommended for its huge, yummy portions (seriously, order to share) at bargain prices and fun atmosphere. For a treat, do dinner at the five-star Southern Sun Maputo just up the road. Non-residents are welcome and the buffet is about R150.

FACILITIES

Room space is tight but the necessities are neatly accommodated — including a teacoffee station, a fridge, DStv and desk. The “no-frills” part means no baths (showers only) and no wardrobe — there are hangers on an open rack if wrinkles matter. From 4.30- 9.30pm, the breakfast area becomes a rooftop bar. And yes, they do offer “the modern human’s oxygen” — free wifi. Guests also get access to the gym next door.

RATES

The opening special of $99 per room (sleeps two) ends May 20. Then, it’s $130 in a standard, $140 in a sea-facing superior.
