Designer Tristan du Plessis of StudioA on what makes him tick

-

He may be something of a stripling, but 30-year-old Tristan du Plessis of StudioA has not let his age hold him back. Working on interiors projects around the world that have earned him international awards, he focuses on hospitality and residential projects, and can turn even the most corporate of projects into a glorious design destination. We catch up with Tristan as he prepares for Design Joburg, where he’ll be putting together a CoLab room featuring a great lineup of global and local brands. In the midst of crazy deadlines, he shares seven of the things that keep him inspired when he’s not on the job.

1 A design trend that gets me going at the moment is terrazzo.

2 A furniture piece I can’t live without is the Cassina Auckland chair. Its lines and the craftsmanship are so en pointe.

3 An album I can listen to over and over again is Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) by WuTang Clan.

4 A series I’m loving at the moment is Black Mirror, because every episode brings new thought provocation.

5 A show I was recently inspired by was the Philipp Plein show at New York Fashion Week. It was inspiring in how over-the-top it was.

6 My favourite way to spend a day in Cape Town is eating. Of course.

7 A travel destination I could go to again and again is Bali or Mykonos, for time to reflect and have fun.
