Yamaoka Tesshu (birth name Ono Tetsutaro), Japanese swordsman, is born in Edo (Tokyo). He practises swordsmanship from the age of nine and is considered one of Japan’s great real samurai, perhaps the last — a true samurai being a warrior who is a master of three arts: the sword, zazen and the brush — who played an important role in the Meiji Restoration in the Bakumatsu period. He is the founder of the Itto Shoden Muto-ryu school of swordsmanship
