Yamaoka Tesshu (birth name Ono Tetsutaro), Japanese swordsman, is born in Edo (Tokyo). He practises swordsmans­hip from the age of nine and is considered one of Japan’s great real samurai, perhaps the last — a true samurai being a warrior who is a master of three arts: the sword, zazen and the brush — who played an important role in the Meiji Restoratio­n in the Bakumatsu period. He is the founder of the Itto Shoden Muto-ryu school of swordsmans­hip
