DJ Abby Nurock’s perfect Sunday

- Abby Nurock, DJ L. S

The best way I can think of to spend my Sunday morning is in bed for as long as possible with my two furry loved ones — cats, of course. If I haven’t had a gig the night before, I’ll make an effort to go to my friend Steven Hayman’s yoga session in the park at Emmarentia. It’s a beautiful setting in the botanical gardens.

Later in the day, if I’m not glued to my couch watching series on my laptop, and if I’m feeling social, I’ll head to Maboneng. I’m a huge fan of its cosmopolitan, inner-city vibe, and one of my favourite restaurants is Che Argentinian. Their steaks are the best this side of South America. I also love a good wiggle at The Living Room — an urban oasis of great music in a rooftop jungle. The vibe and setting are incomparable. But if I feel like a rest and spending Sunday by myself, I relax on my outside couch with a good book.

I read books from opposite ends of the spectrum, depending on my mood. There are a couple of options next to my bed. If I need to switch off and be transported into another reality, I’ll choose a good psychological or crime thriller. I recently read Into the Water by Paula Hawkins and now I’m reading The Woman in the Window by AJ Finn. If I don’t feel like fiction, then I’ll pick up something of a metaphysical nature. I’m obsessed by everything “mind, body and soul” related and love reading about spirituality, psychology, meditation, medium work, guides, power of energies and the mind. I am also fascinated by cosmology and quantum physics. A lot of the time my brain is too drained after a weekend to process such intense info, but when I am up to it I lose myself.

In the evenings I enjoy going to a movie at Hyde Park shopping centre, with the biggest box of salt and vinegar popcorn. I follow the film with a few hours of paging through books at Exclusive Books, where I absorb the calm and decompress after a weekend of gigs.

If I haven’t ventured out of my house and I’m bored with my options, I’ll go out for a hearty meal (and whiskey or a giant glass or bottle of red wine) with good friends or with my family. One of my family favourites is Franco’s in Parkview. It’s a family owned and run Italian restaurant that is a weekend essential and tradition.

I spend hours every day “crate digging” for new and wonderful music (vinyl only, of course). Because I’m a bit more limited for choice (not every track is pressed vinyl), it takes me a lot longer to find music I love and know people will love. Luckily it’s my favourite pastime. For listening purposes, I stream a lot of mixes off SoundCloud — sets from festivals or live recorded club gigs from my favorite DJs. I am through and through a lover of all genres of “House” music — chilled, ambient, deep, progressive, minimal, tech, vocal, funky or jazzy.

Before bed? There’s no such thing. I’m a nocturnal creature and my creative juices are most active just before bed. I love to design my jewellery (I’m a jewellery designer by day). In an ideal world, I would have a hot bath, play my “rain” or “ocean” meditation sounds and fall fast asleep. But, alas, I write myself a million “to do” notes until I’m actually too anxious to fall asleep. #someonepleasegetherataser.
