WHAT I’M WATCHING

- L. S Tymon Smith LESEDI OLUKO Oluko is a programmer and co-curator of this year’s European Union Film Festival

I remember bingeing on The Mentalist and Fringe on DVD. The Mentalist because at the time I found it so clever I was hooked and coupled with my attraction to Simon Baker it was perfect! With Fringe the stories were great and I loved the alternate universe vibe and I was surprised I enjoyed it as much as I did because I’m not big on sci-fi.

At the moment everything is on hold as

I don’t have time to watch anything. I do get excited when this happens because then I have a whole weekend when I have time to not get out of pyjamas and stream what I’ve missed and forget to eat and not have to shower. Earlier in the year I was hooked on Atlanta Season 2 and watched that every week — it didn’t matter how busy I was, I had to catch it — the same went for Insecure’s last season.

I’m so lazy about trying to figure out what’s new and what I will like and I’m fortunate enough to have friends with their finger on the pulse — so I generally decide based on whether I like what they say about it or not. Then my younger sisters, also with their fingers on the pulse, will insist that I watch this or the other and I resist, then I get into it and no one can get me out my apartment.

Any opportunity to create content that can live on alternate platforms (and has an audience) is exciting! I think the world opening up in this way means diverse content without broadcast restrictions is amazing. I don’t have a TV so everything I watch is online and I have access to a variety of content that suits my needs and isn’t injured by someone dictating where the story can go and killing it dead. I am so amazed and proud of Diprente with the success of Catching Feelings on Netflix, and more of this is required. It seems slow but I hope soon there will be more content distributors latching onto this beautiful train.

I have been in awe at the diversity of stories out there — from the international market (mainly the West). And more keeps coming and one can barely keep up. It’s been great to see the African-American series that have come out — bold, daring and no fucks being given! It’s a beautiful thing and I can’t imagine that it will not grow from here.

I am in development on a Vodcast at the moment with three friends — we’ve shot a pilot already and hopefully by the end of this year there will be something for us to speak about and share — at the moment I can’t say more than this.
