Here’s an epic day trip for fans of THAT OTHER ’GAME’

-

About 100km northeast of Barcelona, Girona is worth a visit for the same reason that the location scouts of HBO’s Game of Thrones picked it. This attractive city of narrow Roman and Byzantine alleyways and Romanesque and Gothic arches played backdrop parts in the fictional locations of both Braavos and King’s Landing in the series. Embracing its association with the show, the city has organised Game of Thrones tours, and one can buy an ice cream in the shape of character Jaime Lannister’s amputated hand.

Girona even has its own La Rambla, town centre and fresh food market, although much smaller than Barcelona’s.

If you support the underdog, this year the local football club, Girona FC, was promoted to La Liga from the Segunda División, and has achieved remarkable success. As a result they’ve had to increase their stadium to seat 19 000 from the original 13 000 capacity.
