HIGH STANDARDS IN A MOUNTAIN KINGDOM

-

LOCATION

In the heart of Lesotho’s bustling capital Maseru, Avani Maseru is a short drive from entertainment, shopping and business districts and the perfect base for business meetings or just relaxing by the pool. The hotel is just a five-minute drive from the Maseru border post and a 30-minute drive from the airport. An airport shuttle service is available upon request and will take you through both villages and town, all while surrounded by the iconic Maloti Mountains.

STYLE

The hotel recently underwent an extensive R25-million rejuvenation that included the modernisation and refurbishment of all 105 rooms. The foyer area now boasts colourful but classic “chill” areas overlooking the Mohokare River. Guests have complimentary and uninterrupted internet services to plan their day, or just reconnect with loved ones at home. Appealing to those who are always on the move but like a touch of playful class.

SERVICE

Although it resembles many other hotels in appearance and infrastructure, friendly staff set it apart. Whether you need to call a taxi, organise a late check-out or find out where to get a traditional Basotho blanket, staff always seem eager to assist and make your stay as pleasant as possible.

HOW’S THE GRUB?

If you fancy braving the street markets in town, take a guide and try some of the authentic dishes sold from pots and braai stands on the pavements. Lesotho shares much of its culinary tastes with South Africa, so beans, mielie meal and chicken are common. If that all sounds a little too adventurous, the hotel’s restaurant offers a buffet of international favourites and a wide range of vegetarian options. A large dining area overlooking the Mohokare Valley offers the perfect backdrop for a hearty meal after a long day.

ACTIVITIES

Street markets are a five-minute drive away, as are several shopping centres with all the usual South African stores. The Basotho Hat curio store is nearby and stocks souvenirs to make your friends jealous. Go fishing on the Mohokare River or explore the nearby mountains in a 4x4, on cycling trails or on the back of a pony like the locals. There is also a cultural village nearby that offers insights into the Basotho way of life, their rituals and customs, and the meanings behind clothes and ornaments.

BEST TIME TO GO

Best is the winter months from May to August, when it is cold and dry but you have a chance of seeing snow. Summer is good if you are looking for the sun.

FACILITIES

Besides a conference centre, the hotel also offers a pool and lapa area for relaxation. A small bar and entertainment area in the foyer is also very popular, as is the curio shop if you need a quick gift for those back at home.

RATES

A standard room costs R1 405 and offers a great balcony view. The Avani Suite, from R2 902, is bigger and includes a small area near the pool to lounge with friends or family. If you book early, you can usually save up to R400 off your room and specials that pop up during the year often include discounts on food and room upgrades.
