The number of roads in the Dutch village of Giethoorn, north of Amsterdam.

The only way to get around the old part of the village (the “new” part, sadly, does have roads) is by boat or on one of the cycle paths that were built much later. Happily, there are no cars or smelly trucks or even noisy outboard motors to shatter the idyll. As Condé Nast Traveler notes, the loudest thing you are likely to encounter during a visit is the noise of ducks.

The village — built on a stretch of reclaimed marshland — was named for the thousands of goat horns that were found when the marsh was being drained (the goats had apparently perished in a flood a thousand years ago).

Some 2 600 people live there and make good use of the 180 bridges that cross the little canals.
