Elaborate dirty trick down at the bank
● In 1975 Hain was charged for a bank theft of £490 worth of £5 notes at a Barclays Bank branch in Putney. After a two-week trial in 1976, Hain, then 26, was acquitted. The nonexistent case against Hain caused outrage and calls for the resignation of the director of public prosecutions. It was revealed afterwards that the thief had been a South African agent who looked like the anti-apartheid activist.
