Shooting blanks

In 1952, while photographing an ANC meeting at which he met Nelson Mandela for the first time, Goldblatt, who was the only photographer in the room except for some security police, spent hours continuously shooting before realising that the camera had not engaged with the film and the film was all blank. He recalled the incident as “an object lesson that I was not destined to become a news photographer”.
