Brazil cuts deforestation emissions
Emissions from deforestation in the Amazon rainforest were cut by 610-million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), compared to the 2020 target of 564-million tons, Brazil’s environment ministry said.
The Amazon, the world’s largest tropical rainforest, soaks up vast amounts of CO2 and its preservation is seen as vital to the fight against climate change. But destruction of the forest releases large quantities of CO2.
