MY PERFECT WEEKEND

Thembisa Mdoda, TV presenter and radio host

How Thembisa Mdoda spends hers

Over the weekend

I host the breakfast show on Metro FM with Mo G on Saturday mornings, and at the end of every show I say, Lonwabo, Lonwabile, Mommy’s coming home. And that’s exactly what I do. The only exception is when I have the occasional gig after my radio show, at which I’m an MC.

I’m a home body on the weekends.

I really love to relax and clear my mind, play with the kids, spend time with my love. Since I’m the only female in our little family, I usually just watch them wrestle or do push-ups and all that stuff that uses up all their excess energy. We spend a lot of time at the arcade, going from game to game until we get tired. The kids never get tired, by the way.

I am obsessed with Thai food lately

so that’s where you’ll find me if we go out. I particularly like Koi and Simply Asia. I always order the duck and my partner gets all the vegan options on the menu.

I spend most of my weekend

with my family. Hands down, they’re the people I want to be with. They are the funniest bunch of people and I love to laugh. I like to sit and look at my kids and just smile. It calms my spirit in this crazy world.

If I have any moments to myself

I’ll read anything by Angela Makholwa. Her book Black Widow Society is a work of art. I get so involved in her stories. I imagine myself in them. I would actually love to produce the film adaptation of this book.

While we’re enjoying our weekend,

Khaya Mthethwa’s latest album with Oasis Worship, All About Jesus, will be on, on repeat. It’s that good and that effective for my spiritual journey.

Sometimes, in the evenings,

we’ll watch a little TV. Local programmes are just amazing this year. There is so much creativity at the moment and I’m an avid supporter of our industry.

I also love to find new series

from all over the world to binge on. It’s a serious learning experience too. My partner and I love Curb Your Enthusiasm.

I used to hate it and he asked me to give it one more shot — now I love it. It reminds me of him so I’d watch it any day.

The last thing we do on a Sunday

to prepare for the week ahead is to pray. It may seem trivial to some, but for us it carries a lot of weight.
