GOING BATS IN VEGAS

The “Sky Beam” that sends a shaft of brilliant light from the Luxor Hotel into the starry night above Las Vegas is not only the world’s most powerful beam — 42.3 billion candela and visible up to 440km away — it has also developed its own ecosystem. First came the moths, for obvious reasons, who were in turn followed by the bats who attracted the owls. It’s a win-win too for pilots, who use the beam as a navigation waypoint.
