According to Maori legend, the kauri tree and the sperm whale are chiefs of their environments. When the whale invited the kauri to live in the cool ocean, the kauri declined. At the whale’s suggestion, however, they agreed to exchange skins. That is why the bark of the kauri is thin and as full of resin as the whale is full of oil.
