MY PERFECT WEEKEND

Timothy De Monk, musician

Give Timothy De Monk a beach & a braai

The perfect weekend for me? A mixture of things I love to do and things that I’ve always wanted to do. It would also include ideal summer weather.

The weekend adventure would kick off with booking into an Airbnb on Friday with my closest friends, somewhere close to the beach or Theewaterskloof Dam. I say my closest friends because any trip with them is always a fun-filled one.

SATURDAY: I am in no hurry to wake up! We will prepare a massive home-cooked feast filled with bacon, eggs, mushrooms and the rest — a typical breakfast where you can’t go wrong.

After breakfast we will spend most of the morning on a boat, wakeboarding and water-skiing.

The afternoon is spent braaing. Our friend and braai master Injae would be the one braaing, of course. A braai with me and my mates normally involves music. It could be jamming along on a guitar and singing or singing karaoke style to our favourite songs.

Saturday evening we head into town and go clubbing. This is where things tend to get a little wild and the dancing and shouting becomes our “anthem” of the night. My personal taste in club music is a bit of trap and hip-hop. This genre of music generally gets me moving.

SUNDAY: It’s recovery time, so it has to be very chilled. Preferably breakfast at Salisbury in Woodstock — it’s a great restaurant with awesome staff and truly amazing food. After breakfast it’s ideal to sneak in an hour of gym time where I can train. This helps me focus my mind when I’m a bit stressed.

Then it’s time for us to take a scenic drive around Cape Town and end up taking too many pictures and selfies while listening to artists like Quinn XCII, Blackbear and Post Malone to get that road-trip mood going.

The drive around Cape Town leads us to Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay, where you can always find quality entertainment and food. Then it’s back to our Airbnb for our last night.

Since we’re at the beach, this is the ideal time to watch the sunset and have a little fire going on the stoep. At this stage the banter and teasing between my mates gets real. We would end up sharing stories to well past one in the morning before going to bed and heading home the next day.

This would be my perfect weekend. My ideal weekend though? Spending time writing songs/ music production/ reading and gaming.

De Monk’s latest single, No Stress Moment, is out now.
