Tower power

A “campanile” is the Italian version of a free-standing bell tower. So the Leaning Tower of Pisa is a campanile, as is the 98m-tall St Mark’s campanile in Venice — to which the tower in Port Elizabeth, pictured right, bears a striking resemblance.
