The city is famous for two things: its El Greco paintings and its steel. But it was the steel that put Toledo on the map (the Grecos came later), starting with Hannibal whose army used swords made in Toledo during the Punic Wars. The days of conquering armies stopping by for an order of 20,000 blades are long gone but two millennia - and may rivals - later, Toledo’s artisan sword-makers are still in business.
