A ROOM AT THE TOP

-

New York’s Plaza Hotel — once owned by Donald Trump — is a major film and literary star in its own right. That might have something to do with F Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby in which there is a confrontation between Jay Gatsby and Tom Buchanan in one of the suites. The hotel has since appeared in dozens of films, books and TV shows, including The Sopranos in which Carmela Soprano and daughter Meadow have an annual lunch under the portrait of Eloise, the heroine of a series of books about a girl who lives in the hotel. The Plaza is certainly a place for the rich. When it opened in 1907 a room cost $2.50; today rates start around $1,000 per night.
