QUEEN OF THE HILL

After a significant structural transformation, Singita Pamushana Lodge has reopened and we were lucky enough to be some of the first to experience its magical offerings

In the heart of Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve in southeastern Zimbabwe lies Singita Pamushana Lodge, surrounded by 52,000ha of untouched wilderness that is managed by the nonprofit Malilangwe Trust in collaboration with Singita. With the views being one of the main attractions of its majestic hilltop location, the skilful and flawless expansion of the outer decks must be one of the best parts of its renovation. The new, elevated fire-pit and suspended bar with multilevel deck areas offer shaded spaces to relax while enjoying the views. As Sally Tsiliyannis from GAPP Architects explains, “All new built elements were woven into the existing landscape. Even pathways were realigned to pass closer to the magnificent baobab trees, allowing guests to brush up against their textured surfaces. Guests can also weave their way along the edge of the Malilangwe Dam via a series of staggered, interlinked platforms perched high above the ground, each offering its own unique view of the extraordinary surroundings.”

Additional to the two new two-bedroom suites — bringing to eight the number of spacious suites — there is also a five-bedroom villa for larger groups and families. One of the main perks would have to be that each suite has its own private pool, with seating areas overlooking the panoramic views. Each suite also offers of an amazing sense of privacy inside and out with living areas where guests can relax and unwind. The two new suites are even more secluded from the main lodge.

The main lodge and surrounds have also been extended and modified with an impressive new entrance and walkways within the landscaped indigenous gardens that lead into the thatched lobby with breathtaking views of an infinity pool overlooking endless African bush.

According to the lead designer of Cecile and Boyd, Geordi de Sousa Costa, “Singita Pamushana is built on a hill and its majestic location naturally inclines the design to hinge on the idea of a royal household holding fort over this beautiful land that stretches to the horizons beyond. We humbly respect this dedication to the Zimbabwean culture, so have continued this path with reference to yesteryears but within an updated context.”

There is strong use of locally inspired texture and pattern throughout the interiors, from exquisite tiled inlays to carved furniture and geometric shapes, and rich earthy tones celebrating the African aesthetic. The skilful touch continues throughout, with the use of natural textiles like raw silks, woven leathers and rich weaves serving as the backdrop to original African artefacts combined with contemporary forms.

A stay at Singita Pamushana Lodge is an experience of a lifetime. Unlike any other place on Earth, it is truly a sensory feast from one minute to the next, leaving you with a sense of wonder that lingers in your mind for a long time.
