THE ARCTIC: EUROPE WALRUSES ON AN ICE FLOE IN THE ANDOYANE ARCHIPELAGO, SVALBARD

-

Svalbard is an arctic archipelago, 60% of which is covered by snow and ice. It is governed by Norway. With two-ton bodies and tusks that can grow up to a metre long, walruses are a formidable presence. On land they settle into a deep sleep that can last for up to 19 hours. These rests are much needed as they can engage in periods of almost continuous swimming for up to 84 hours at a stretch.
