LOOKING BACK
FROM THE SUNDAY TIMES 50 YEARS AGO
The CNA has banned the sale of the latest issue of a sophisticated British magazine because it carries a picture of Joburg actress Genevieve Waite wearing only a man’s shirt in the embrace of a shirtless Negro actor, Calvin Lockhart. The picture, taken on the set of the film Joanna, appears in the December issue of Films and Filming. The shirtless Negro actor is shown seated on a bed. Miss Waite stands in front of him, and his arms are around her waist. Not only the bedside picture of Miss Waite could have caused trouble with the publications board. Others include a frontal picture of Miss Waite wearing only a man’s tie, a photograph of a nude Miss Waite emerging from a swimming pool, and a picture of Miss Waite and Lockhart kissing on a beach. — December 29 1968

A R33m luxury jet bought by the Kwazulu government flew into a political storm yesterday. The ANC wants the aircraft impounded by the Transitional Executive Council. Kwazulu took delivery of the twin-engine Hawker 800 on Friday, just four months before the homeland will cease to exist on April 27. According to calculations by an experienced pilot, the new aircraft will cut flying time between Ulundi and major local cities by up to 46 minutes, but costs twice as much to operate as the turbo-prop King Air 300 owned by the Kwazulu National Airways Corp. — January 2 1994
