Pioneer

A century ago, Heather Price was the first standing surfer to be photographed in SA. She is piloting a 2.4m hollow-timber board covered with canvas and painted to make it watertight, holding a rope to keep the nose of the barge up. Behind her is one of SA’s first surfboard builders, Lex Miller, with his legs dangling off the back of the board to act as stabilising fins.
