1933: Italy’s then future world heavyweigh­t champion Primo Carnera knocks out Ernie Schaaf in the 13th round. Schaaf died four days later. Six months earlier Schaaf had been knocked unconsciou­s by Max Baer, who in 1930 had killed another boxer in the ring.

1958: According to a report in the Rand Daily Mail, a goalkeeper in a match in England, while his team was 11-0 up, was booked for lighting up a cigarette midgame. His team, playing in a junior league, won 19-0.

2000: Bafana Bafana are beaten 2-0 by co-hosts Nigeria in their African Nations’ Cup semifinal in Lagos. SA conceded the first goal within the opening minute after Thabo Mngomeni, playing in place of suspended Eric Tinkler, failed to clear the ball quickly and Tijani Babangida pounced for an early 1-0 lead. Babangida scored again in the 34th minute.

2003: Zimbabwe players Andy Flower and Henry Olonga wear black armbands in their Cricket World Cup ODI against Namibia in Harare to highlight the death of democracy in their country. The match, the first ODI played by Namibia, was won by Zimbabwe.
