BARE BONES, BIG BILL
Robert Niro and celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa have teamed up to create a traditional Japanese ryokan on Carbon Beach — or “Billionaire’s Beach” as it’s normally known — in Malibu, California. The 16-room inn is right up there with the most exclusive hotels in the world, offering (says its website) “a unique blend of Japanese hospitality and Californian coastline”. There is lots of teak furniture and Brazilian walnut flooring, in “a clean linear form”. The only thing not minimalist here is the price — $2,000 a night. And you have to stay — or at least pay for — a minimum of two nights.
