Japan takes aim at plastic bag problem

-

Retailers in Japan began charging for plastic bags this week in a move aimed at curbing Japanese consumers’ love of packaging and to bring the country in line with other major economies.

Shops can decide how much to charge customers for the bags, with a common price being three yen (about 47c).

The country produces more plastic packaging waste per capita than any nation apart from the US, according to the United Nations.
