Reboot yourself for success
● How do you position yourself for financial success? With the three-rule reboot: review your budget so you understand what you’re spending on, revisit your goals as they change as your circumstances change, and have a game plan.
Psychologist and life coach Dr Tshepiso Matentjie says to build resilience, you need to develop tools of mindfulness, relational currency, a growth mindset and self-care.
Mindfulness is about recognising, acknowledging and accepting your feelings, thoughts and bodily sensations in the moment, regulating and controlling them and then directing energy to effect change in your life.
“As you come up with new goals and game plan, figure out where there is misalignment, areas where you need to grow, whether it’s about upskilling, finding a mentor or a coach, or connecting with others so you can cultivate new habits and find ways of overcoming your limitations and the things that sabotage you,” Matentjie says.
Developing relationship currency is about understanding you have people in your network who may help or hinder your ability to adapt, she says. “In a crisis, choose to surround yourself with people who are going to give you energy.”
A growth mindset is the belief that you can change your mind and reality and future based on your effort and persistence, Matentjie says.
“Whatever the challenge, see it as a teachable moment.”
Developing self-care is realising you are your greatest asset and how to take care of yourself.
These turbulent times give you an opportunity to reflect on your quality of life and the choices you’ve made to pursue your goals – how you’ve compromised, for example, your spirituality, your relationship with your children or your significant other.
And seeking help shows you’re respecting and protecting your greatest asset, which is you. “See this as part of investing in you,” Matentjie says.
