Champions Liverpool’s winning Anfield run ended by Burnley

-

● Liverpool’s 100% Premier League home record ended yesterday as the champions were held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley.

Jay Rodriguez equalised for Burnley in the 69th minute after Andy Robertson had given Liverpool a first-half lead.

Liverpool, on 93 points, must win their last three games to beat Manchester City’s record total of 100 points from two years ago. Burnley are ninth on 50 points.

The last time Liverpool failed to win at Anfield in the league was in January 2019, when they drew 1-1 with Leicester City.

Burnley could even have pulled off a famous victory when Johann Berg Gudmundsson struck the bar three minutes from fulltime.

Burnley keeper Nick Pope, continuing to make the case for promotion to the England No 1 spot, kept Liverpool at bay with a series of good saves, including a brilliant reaction to keep out a powerful close-range effort from Mohamed Salah in the 18th minute.

Chelsea suffered a setback in their bid to qualify for the Champions League as Sheffield United rekindled their own European ambitions with an impressive 3-0 win.

Frank Lampard’s side were punished for dismal defending at Bramall Lane as David McGoldrick struck twice, either side of Oli

McBurnie’s goal.

The Blues remain third after a second defeat in their last four games. They will be down to fifth place by Monday evening if Leicester beat Bournemouth and Manchester United defeat Southampton.

With games against Norwich, Liverpool and Wolves left in the league, Chelsea will hope second-placed Manchester City’s twoyear European ban is upheld on Monday.

Norwich City were relegated from the Premier League when West Ham United won 4-0 at Carrow Road to hand Daniel Farke’s side their seventh straight defeat.

The result leaves Norwich stranded at the bottom of the standings with 21 points and three rounds of fixtures still to be played this season. Watford gave themselves hope of survival with a 2-1 win over Newcastle. — Reuters, AFP
