Awkwafina and Sandra Oh team up for this enjoyable farce about two sisters who collaborate to help save their mother from gambling debts by entering a quiz competition. It doesn’t always find the right balance, but thanks to strong performances succeeds in offering solidly enjoyable entertainment.
Higuita: The Way of the Scorpion Netflix
He’s most famous for the “scorpion kick” save he executed in a friendly against England in 1995. But as this documentary shows, there’s more to the life of former Colombian goalkeeper Rene Higuita than acrobatics. It traces his rise from poverty on the streets of Medellin to his international sports and adventures involving Pablo Escobar and Maradona.
Nyad Netflix
Based on the true story of athlete Diana Nyad, who decided at the age of 60 to take on the task of swimming from Florida to Cuba. Directed by filmmaker couple Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, it’s standard inspirational sports biopic beats are given some lift by excellent performances from Annette Bening as Nyad and Jodie Foster.
All the Light We Cannot See Netflix
Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning World War 2 novel is brought to life in this adaptation written by Steven Knight. A young German soldier and a blind French girl are drawn together by the power of radio and become embroiled in a Nazi plot to track down a priceless diamond. Starring newcomer Aria Maria Loberti, it’s a visually gorgeous adaptation of a beloved book about the power of hope.
