Steven Soderbergh directs this very twisty labyrinth noir, loosely inspired by Japanese master Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic noir High and Low. Featuring a high-power cast that includes Claire Danes, Timothy Olyphant, CCH Pounder, Dennis Quaid, Zazie Beetz and Jim Gaffigan, it’s a head-scratching high stakes thriller centred on a botched kidnapping in New York that leads to the unravelling of several threads linking the lives of a wealthy white family and that of a Caribbean gang lord. Though its complicated plot may prove sometimes infuriating, it all holds together thanks to strong performances and smart, atmospheric direction from Soderbergh.
