HUMAN RIGHTS FESTIVAL

Celebrate three decades of democratic South Africa at the sixth edition of Constituti­on Hill’s Human Rights Festival (humanright­sfestival.co.za). The three-day event will emphasise activism, necessary conversati­ons surroundin­g human rights and our country’s beleaguere­d past and an optimistic future. It also includes art, film, exhibition­s, live music and a children’s corner. Entry to the event is free, as our nation has been for the past 30 years.

KWAZULU-NATAL PHILHARMON­IC ORCHESTRA SUMMER SYMPHONY SEASON (CONCERT 4)

WHERE: Playhouse Opera Theatre, Smith Street, Durban Central WHEN: March 21

From the Moravian and Bohemian-inspired folk music of Antonín Dvorák to Camille SaintSaëns’s Romantic-era compositio­ns and musical wunderkind Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s classical melodies, join the orchestra for the final evening of their summer symphony season on March 21. Featuring conductor Daniel Boico, soloist Nina Schumann (piano) and pianist Megan Geoffrey-Prins, audience members’ aural senses will be treated to Dvorák’s Czech Suite, op.39, D major, Saint-Saëns’ perennial favourite Le Carnaval des animaux (Carnival of the Animals) and Mozart’s Symphony No 38, K.504, D Major. March 30 - April 21 Njabulo Ndebele’s heart-rending novel The Cry of Winnie Mandela is coming alive on stage at the Market Theatre’s Barney Simon Theatre. Named for a misunderst­ood, oft-divisive, resilient woman who paved the way for women’s empowermen­t and equal rights for all in a turbulent, violent, divisive and shameful era of our country’s past, the play’s leitmotif is that of waiting as it follows four women who reflect on the multiple meanings of “waiting” in the absence of their individual male partners.
