More statues in EFF firing line

-

AFTER a failed attempt to topple the Uitenhage War Memorial this week, the EFF in Nelson Mandela Bay warned they would return to finish the job, while targeting other memorials as well.

On Friday members of the party tried to “necklace” the Uitenhage memorial, which commemorates the AngloBoer War, before they were interrupted by the police.

Eastern Cape police spokesman Warrant Officer Basil Seekoei said police had not made any arrests yet but promised there would be one soon.

“The person will be charged with malicious damage to property,” said Seekoei.

EFF’s regional deputy chairperson, Bo Madwara, said no arrest would deter the party. “We are not afraid,” he said.

Madwara said the EFF in Nelson Mandela Bay had identified a number of “colonial and apartheid” monuments and statues that they would try to destroy over coming weeks. — Jan Bornman
