Mayor tries to dash off call for help in Morse code
THE good people of Nelson Mandela Bay, the metro serving Port Elizabeth and surrounds, have been giggling at the antics of their mayor, Ben Fihla, for a while now — and this week was no exception.
According to media reports from the Friendly City, the mayor’s latest clanger came at Tuesday’s council meeting.
Fihla was reading from a prepared speech, during which he apparently aimed to announce the name of a new portfolio chairman to replace one who had just been sacked.
But instead of the name of the would-be acting incumbent, his speechwriters had typed “— —”.
The council erupted in laughter when the mayor, seemingly oblivious, read: “I am now appointing dash dash as a caretaker portfolio chairperson.”
With a tough municipal poll coming up next year, maybe it’s time for him to dash off before he dashes the ANC’s re-election campaign .
