Arch backs silo art
Reality strikes on Wednesday for the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town, which won glowing global headlines in the run-up to its opening. That’s when it starts taking paying customers, at R180 each, and begins to discover whether pumping R500-million and thousands of tons of concrete into an old grain silo was an act of genius or a costly folly. One good portent: at Friday’s opening, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu pretended to call heaven and announced after hanging up: “Madiba says yes!”
